Here are some stories from our AIR Program teachers who currently teach arts education at Marengo Elementary School.

Teaching Artist Grades 3 - 5: Sarit Swanborn

Wow! What a week! My third, fourth, and fifth graders truly seemed to relish this interactive drawing session utilizing blind contour and gesture drawing techniques. The pace seemed rhythmic and highly engaging as students explored drawing with different line weights, close observation of their fingers and hands, and theatrical gesture posing for one another. The most pleasant surprise of all, however, was to watch students, teachers, and even many parent volunteers focus with intensity…accessing page after page in their quest to capture the spirit and line of their hands or a student model in an action pose—using ink pens, then soft charcoal pencils to record the essence of their subject over and over again. This studio-like atmosphere was nothing short of exhilarating, and yet offered an appropriate challenge for our introductory dip into the corridors of the moving body as an art form. I cannot wait for week two, as we explore classical proportions of the body through wire sculpture!

Teaching Artist K - 2: Sarah Dugan

The classroom teacher was reading a poem about leaves when I arrived so I instantly started with their poem and all the art within it. The word "hue"was in the poem and I took out my leaf samples. The poem couldn't have been a better transition for my point/line lesson as we looked at all the lines within the leaves. We then read the book and did work in our art journals, then did gesture drawings. I didn't want to suggest the gesture drawing models stand on the teacher's desk in her class, but after two, the teacher suggested it and rearranged the entire room to do it. She was so thrilled to see them learning "useful skills." We then did the scavenger hunt outside and the teacher said the students will definitely write stories in the end with her.

Karen Green's Tiny Stampede this Saturday

We are so excited to have Karen Green back at SPACE on Saturday, Sept. 24. This is her third show and we feel so honored to have an artist with her talent and depth share her work with us. We do plan to have a preview of her 57 artworks on Friday before the opening so thatfans and friends of SPACE will have a chance to nab one of her pieces early. New Show
Paintings by Jordan Daines.
Opening reception May 21

SPACE presents Tame, a new series of oil paintings by South Pasadena artist Jordan Daines. She has exhibited her work in several group shows at SPACE, and has won over many fans with her painterly style and vivid palette.

With this new series Daines brings her eye from the landscapes of her earlier work indoors to the material trappings of domestic life. She renders commonplace objects with bold abstracted strokes, reminding us of the excess of material goods around us, but also celebrating their simple beauty with each tonal variation. The paintings will be on view at SPACE through Saturday, July 2nd.

WINDOW EXHIBIT

Featured in the SPACE storefront window are life-sized sculptures created by Cynthia Minet from a series of domestic animals made from recycled and re-purposed plastics, and LEDs. The work is part of an ongoing project which addresses the topic of genetic modification of animals, the prevalence of plastics in our environment and the food chain, and the dependence our culture has on electricity. Still/LIFE continues through March 12

If you missed the opening of Still/LIFE, you still have a chance to see the work of photographers Shannon Leith and Pete Starman.

A graduate of The Art Center College of Design, Starman has focused his talents on editorial work, creating images that are dynamic, tense, and charged with the relationships of its players. They are stills from a larger scene, bursting out of the confines of their frame and highlighting the less tangible nuances.

"I'm interested in relationships and how people relate to each other but also how people relate to inanimate objects and their environments, in a word - context." The strength of many of his images lies in his very deliberate cropping, making us question the larger story beyond the still.

Shannon Leith's work is a meditation on the beauty and sanctity of the mundane. A recent Biola University graduate with a BFA in photography, Leith documents her home environment daily and is genuinely absorbed in celebrating life's smallest beautiful moments, and is able to capture them, so that we can too. She makes us all slow down to appreciate the beauty of a kitchen sponge, or colander. Or the pinkness of a straw, or a friend's red hair in the sun on a road trip.

"I am fascinated by the most ordinary things. For me, the everyday stuff of life has the potential to be full of meaning and mystery. These photographs are my way to practice being present. I'd rather rush, but this is how I slow down and actually see what I'm seeing."

Still/LIFE is on view through March 12.

Space presents unearthed, a group show of local ceramic artists. Brenda Holzke, Toti O'Brien, Jocelyn Webb Pedersen, David Prince, Nicole Ruelle-Oppenheimer, Rebecca Tager and Cynthia Thiel celebrate the organic nature and history of the medium - the happy accidents and surprises; the tactile relationship with the object. SPACE is excited to announce the opening of Our Shaky Civilization, with Animals - collaborative paintings on wood by a family of artists, Abira Ali, Gordon Henderson and Eliza Bee Henderson. The work depicts a shaky civilization where what we once knew as wilderness has been removed and reassembled to resemble a theme park. People and animals cohabitate in the small space they’ve been given, struggling to maintain their now irrational instincts. Opens on May 1, with a reception from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m.

On May 15, join us at 8:00 p.m. for Our Shaky Stories, with Animals - an evening of adult storytelling with members of the Write Club; Ramsey Brown, Lauri Fraser, Gordon Henderson, Jane Morris and Clara York. Textiles on the Edge Opening Draws Crowds

We had a very successful opening for Textiles on the Edge on March 20. Great art, large crowds, children playing - a very fun night in the neighborhood! If you haven't gotten a chance to see this group show, come by during our gallery hours, Tuesday - Friday, 11 a.m. - 6:00 p.m., and Saturday, 12:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. Local artists in the show are Victoria Arriola, Melanie Ciccone, Kathleen Coyle, Karen Green, Lillian Montalvo-Hardy, Vanora Savig, Shelley Stephens, Marie Switzer, Cynthia Thiel and Joan Weizettle.

Textiles on the Edge opens March 20

SPACE is excited to announce the opening of its tenth show, Textiles On the Edge, with a preview and reception on March 20th, 2010.

This group show of ten local artists offers a twist on the conventions of traditional textile arts in their use of unexpected materials and techniques. The works explore personal and global issues, and dealwith form and function, memory and identity, healing and grief.

ARTS WORKSHOPS BEGIN JAN. 19

An comprehensive array of arts workshops for children and adults begins the week of Jan. 19, offering classes in drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, ceramics, and fiction writing, plus a KinderArt class and drawing and ceramics classes for adults.
In addition, starting January 23, families can come to SPACE on Saturdays, from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. to join us in making a different art project each week. Adults can drop off children ages six and older, but reservations are required. For more information about all of our classes, click here .
Registration begins January 5.

The Fall Arts Workshop session was a great success. Parent Eileen Lee told us, "I'm blown away by the stuff that Eamon and Oona are doing in their classes at SPACE. Crazy good stuff. Thank you for being such a great resource."
SPACE recently partnered with SPEF to provide after school art classes at the local elementary schools. Heather Conyers taught printmaking (see below) and Marie Miller taught environmental design. SPACE teaching artist Jocelyn Webb Pedersen held a printmaking workshop at the South Pasadena Library. We love the opportunity to partner with local organizations to provide arts education in our community!

TEEN ART PROJECT, DEC. 10
SPACE will host a card-making art workshop for teens at the South Pasadena Library on Dec. 10, 3:30 - 5:30 p.m., in the Community Room. Students design and hand print holiday cards, inspired by traditional and non-traditional holiday motifs. All materials provided. No artistic skills necessary. Free. HOLIDAY PERFORMANCES, DEC. 11
Take a break from the hectic holidays and join us for an evening of cheer. At 6:30 p.m., artist/writer Gordon Henderson will perform Tales of Christmas and Tyranny, then at 7:00 p.m., bluesy singer Lisa Finnie performs from an eclectic repertoire of holiday songs and standards.

A music critic describes the talented Finnie this way: "This torchy singer's gigs are as fresh as a traveling salesman and as infectious as an office cold."

Karen Green Art Show/ArtsFest

Only three artworks remain available for sale in the Karen Green exhibit, Latent Learning Experiments, on view through Oct. 30. The Forgiveness Machine (at right) created by David Kreitz, based on Ms. Green's design, has been working overtime to the delight of children and relief to the many adults who have used it to forgive or be forgiven. Over thirty mice, created by Ms. Green and other local artists as part of the installation, have been described as "cute" to "scary". Come see for yourself.

Summer vacation's over, kids are back to the school grind and a new wave of bad news seems to slap us in the face each day. We've found some escape from it all at SPACE, where we are excited by the the new art exhibit we've just hung and by the comprehensive new schedule of arts workshops we've put together. Our gallery is getting stocked with must-have art books and cool t-shirts for sale and we look forward to the opening of artist Karen Green's new work on Saturday, September 19, 6:00 - 10:00 p.m.

Ms. Green's mixed media art pieces takes a darkly humorous look at transformative "machines" designed to perform magical feats such as granting forgiveness or turning bacon back into a pig. The pieces are complex, subtle, yet powerful and redemptive. Guests are invited to use a "working" forgiveness machine, based on Ms. Green's designs. The show runs through Oct. 30.

Our fall schedule of workshops offers our largest slate so far, including several drawing classes, taught by some of our favorite teachers, and a Pre-K and a ceramics class. For adults, we have watercolor painting and graphic design for beginners. Classes begin the week of Sept. 28. Click here for the schedule and registration form.

We had a wonderful summer with our arts camp being our primary preoccupation. Dozens of art projects were made, from handmade loteria cards to outlandish model lifeguard stands to magical tree houses. Students took photos of the city mayor and made digital videos now showing on Youtube. It was three weeks of creativity, musical performances, and watching Charlie Chaplin at the Rialto. We had a blast and believe the kids did, too. You can see photos from the camp here.

ARTS CAMP: From August 3 - 21, we host our wonderfully creative neighborhood arts camp, aimed at ages 6 - 14, which runs Monday - Friday, 9:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m each day.

The camp features morning workshops taught by experienced visual artists, an afternoon of unstructured creative fun, walking field trips, and guest visits by professionals in the arts. Past activities have included silent movie viewings at the Rialto Theater, live music at the South Pasadena Music Conservatory, and a photo shoot with a professional photographer. Weekly projects include ceramics, mural painting, chalk art, puppet-making and lots more.

The intimate size of the camp allows us to explore, when possible, individual interests students may have. Students can attend one week or all three. Registration is going on now. More info and registration details are here.

SUMMER ARTS CAMP REGISTRATION BEGINS

Registration for the Summer Arts Camp at SPACE begins today, March 25.
We are excited to bring three weeks of fun and creativity to children in our community this summer. The camp, open to ages 6 - 14, will take place August 3 - 21 at SPACE and an adjacent facility.

The camp operates Monday - Friday, from 9:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. We offer a choice each week of art workshops in the morning taught by teaching artists, then create a fun and creative open studio in the afternoon where students have the opportunity to work on their art projects, engage in group activities, and take our walking field trips to places like the Rialto Theater, the South Pasadena Music Conservatory, a professional photo studio and much more. "ALCHEMY": THE ART OF ANNIE HELM

Come see the art of assemblage artist Annie Helm whose work is currently featured in the SPACE gallery. This remarkable show is a comprehensive survey of the work of Ms.Helm, a South Pasadena resident, who, as a compulsive collector, sees beauty in the mundane, even discarded, objects in our lives and transforms them into beautiful, intricate manifestations of dreams, hopes and memories.

Much of Ms Helm's assemblage work features the Madonna figure. The artist was drawn to the Virgin Mary’s role as the Universal Mother, the embodiment of compassion and self-sacrifice, giver of hope and inner peace. Combining materials and elements from a wide variety of cultures and religions, Ms Helm re-creates the Madonna as an image of global iconography.

We know it's a crazy time of year, but try to make some SPACE in your schedule for two upcoming events this week.

ART TALK An informal wine and cheese discussion with artists whose work is on display in our gallery's "Urban Birds" show. This Wednesday is the last day of the show so SPACE is willing to waive a percentage of our commission so that you can own a "bird" and support local artists.

HOLIDAY OPEN HOUSE

Please join us for a Holiday Open House on Saturday, December 20. On view in the gallery will be work by local artist, Annie Helm, whose inspired assemblages explore universal and personal themes of love, loss, compassion and activism.

A new window installation will be revealed by designer Iris Ferraz dos Santos who will present a delightfully unique take on the journey of light.

We’ll have holiday refreshments and offer a family art activity. Art prints and handmade gifts will be on sale. SPACE will have extended hours from 11 a.m. - 8:00 p.m.

Urban Birds

Our current art show is titled "Urban Birds" and features a variety of artwork in different media by over ten local artists. Artwork on display includes drawings, paintings, prints, photography, ceramics, and jewelry. Artist Liz Young offers a three-legged wingless vinyl bird while Chase Denham has created a facsimile of the dress worn by Tippi Hedren in the horror classic, "The Birds"!

Artist Ronald Llanos' whimsical birdhouse displays his drawings of a "bird-man", a lonely bachelor bird as Joan Swayze uses bits of bird images in both her collages. The show's artists have chosen to portray a wide variety of the winged species including sparrows, kites, parrots, geese, pigeons, penguins, and ducks (of the rubber kind). The diverse and lively array of work on display gives evidence that birds with which humans cohabit are compelling subjects for these local artists.

The show ends Dec. 13.

"Urban Birds" Art Show November 15

SPACE presents its upcoming art show, "Urban Birds", on November 15. The show features paintings, drawings and photographs created by over ten local artists. The gallery opens at 11 a.m. and will be part of the SouthPas ArtsFest happening that day. SPACE will offer family art activities and an artist reception with live music beginning at 5 p.m.

SPACE Grand Opening

SPACE held its Grand Opening on October 25. The day was filled with people coming in to see the renovated space and to look at the art and books on display. Passerby stopped to view the amazing life-size skeletons and "zombie" in the storefront window, created by local artist/designer Lillian Montalvo, while inside children made colorful Day of the Dead masks and ate Halloween cookies. In the evening featured artists Stephanie Mercado and Dolores Carlos (pictured above) joined us to talk about their series of etchings and lineoleum cut prints. By nightfall the place was packed with people toasting to the success of SPACE and its potential for being an inspiring community destination for creative souls.

Our next art opening is November 15, which will feature over 10 artists exploring the theme of "Urban Birds".

SPACE is also excited to offer our first art workshops: a Collage Art class for adults beginning November 13 and a Drawing/Illustration class for children age 9 - 11 starting in Nov. 14.

SPACE GRAND OPENING - OCT. 25

On Saturday, October 25, SPACE, the South Pasadena Arts Center, will celebrate its GRAND OPENING.

SPACE, a community arts center located right in the heart of downtown South Pasadena, offers a gallery featuring artwork by Los Angeles based artists, an eclectic selection of fine art books and one-of-a-kind gifts for sale, plus art-making workshops for both children and adults.

The inaugural art show on October 25th, features the darkly beautiful work of Stephanie Mercado and Dolores Carlos (shown above), as well as an array of Day of the Dead-inspired shrines and altars created by local artists. During the day, there will be refreshments and a fun family art activity, then from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. the artists will be on hand to discuss their work.

Last day of Camp

This is the last day of the SPACE Summer Arts Camp. It's been a rich experience, even thrilling at times, as we have seen so many children leaning new skills, exploring their creativity and making new friends. This week, kids worked with teacher Joan Swayze at discovering new ways to draw. They used a variety of materials (including spaghetti!) to expand their definition of line and shape and space. Teacher Kat Schroeder worked with the youngest members of the camp on a fun skit involving a movie producer and a giant carrot! The children made scenery, costumes and props for the skit, and also created their own clay creatures and fabric dolls.

The acting/filmmaking class, filled with middle school children, were introduced to acting and filmmaking techniques. They got to perform roles from famous movies like Napoleon Dynamite, the Devil Wears Prada, and Legally Blonde, then they took turns directing and shooting the scenes. We look forward to seeing the edited versions of the scenes today. What a fun and active week - we will report more tomorrow about the experiences of the camp's final day.

SPACE Arts Camp has successful first week

The SPACE Arts Camp completed its first week on Friday and it was a great success! We had twenty seven children participating in our first arts camp and it was a wonderful experience for nearly every one involved. Children age 9 - 13 learned about digital photography, modern art and comic book illustration. They were also treated to a lesson in clay mask-making from ceramicist Rebecca Tager and took a trip to the historic Rialto Theater to see films featuring comedic artist Buster Keaton. An exhibit at the end of the week showed how talented and creative the children were. The students taking Rachel Armas' Get Modern workshop displayed paintings. collages and sculptures inspired by artists such as Picasso, Klimt, Basquiat and Brancusi. The amateur photographers, led by photographer Kathleen McLaughlin, created portfolios of photographs which expressed the students' individual personalities and vision. Artist Seth Astle helped the children in his class to create their own unique comic book characters and storylines which resulted in some very funny and lively comic strips. Thanks to camp assistants Katya Shaposhnik and Vincent Uribe, the week's afternoon studio was filled with creative activities such as drawing paint drip monsters and creating life size portraits. We look forward to Week #2 of SPACE Arts Camp where we hope to have another great week making art and having fun with our friends.

ART WORKSHOPS FOR EVERYONE

Everyone can make art this summer at SPACE! For children age 9 - 14, our Summer Arts Camp runs August 4 - 22, from 9:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. each day. Children participate in a morning workshop then spend the afternoon engaged in fun arts activities. For registration info, click here.
We also have two new arts programs: For ages 6 and up, IMAGINE OUT LOUD is a theater and artmaking "play-shop" offered August 11 - 22, from 9:30 a.m. - Noon, Monday - Friday.
For children age 9 and up, including teens, we are offering three arts workshops:
Silk Screening, where you can design and make your own t-shirts and posters.
Digital Photography, where you can learn how to take great photos and work on them in Photoshop.
Project YourWay, a workshop in which you can design and make eco-friendly art.

This was our final day of the first week of the SPACE arts workshops at the South Pasadena Library. What a successful program it has been so far. Here's what a few of the children had to say about their experience.

SPACE is happy to present two ways for your children to experience art-making this summer.

SPACE is partnering with the SOUTH PASADENA LIBRARY to bring two weeks of hands-on workshops to our community this July. To find out how to register for the Summer Arts Program which will be held in the Library's Community Room, click here.

SPACE is also excited to bring to South Pasadena a unique SUMMER ARTS CAMP that takes place August 4 - 22. Children ages 9 - 14 may attend the camp from 9:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. each week day. Students choose from a variety of morning workshops, then spend the afternoons participating in creative activities, art walks, and enjoying visits by visual and performing artists. Arts Workshops Filling Up

The workshops at the SPACE Summer Arts Camp are filling up. The "Get Modern!" Workshop in week one of the camp (August 4 - 8) is almost full - only one slot is left.

One of the special features of the camp is that each workshop has a limit of 12 students, and the entire camp will consist of less than 36 students per week. You can check out more information about the workshops as well as our talented professional teachers by clicking here.

A New Arts Center for South Pasadena

A group of South Pasadena residents plans to create a vital gathering space in our community for the joyful exploration of the arts. At SPACE, the South Pasadena Arts Center, we imagine a studio with innovative classes and fun events where all ages can experience art-making, plus a lively exhibition space for fine art, and a venue for entertaining lectures, films, and music events. A place that utilizes the vast creative talent in our community and brings together the diverse cultures of South Pasadena and its surrounding neighborhoods.
